Project Spotlight: Maximizing Your Outdoor Space
Colorful spring landscaping, a dip in the pool in the summertime, and a cozy firepit with ample seating for the cooler fall evenings: Welcome to the perfect entertaining space for the ever-changing Indiana seasons! Although this patio is just under 1,000 square feet, it’s packed with carefully executed design elements to optimize the space and function surrounding this Noblesville home.
Designer, Jeff Mull, curated every square foot of this space to bring the homeowners’ vision to life, while also ensuring functionality and durability for years to come. Due to the home’s clay roof, there are no gutters, which causes rain to fall off the home in all areas instead of directed to select zones through the use of downspouts. The landscape beds were designed with slate chips, instead of mulch, to control erosion and eliminate the material from washing away during heavy storms.
Even the patio materials had to be selected to meet regulations from the City of Noblesville, which required the execution of carefully chosen material to carry away excess water around the pool, since we could not utilize the downspouts and bury a drainage system. We installed permeable pavers for the pool deck, and we constructed the base with an additional level of larger stone and used permeable chips instead of polymeric sand between the pavers, all allowing water to flow through for proper drainage (If you’d like to learn more about the importance of water drainage, check out our YouTube video!).
Although Jeff needed to come up with creative drainage solutions for this project, his favorite design element turned out to be how the soldier paver was incorporated as a walkway or landing area from the natural stone steps that lead around the house from the garage. The black color of the steps creates an eye-catching contrast while perfectly blending with the style of the home.
Biggest Challenges:
Limited square footage in this space due to the close neighboring home and golf course in the back created a unique challenge. Our team had to think about how this space would be used by the homeowners, as well as how it would react to uncontrollable weather conditions. Adding a pool into this size of space is very uncommon, and it had to be designed just right to fit within the area. In order to increase functionality, Jeff added retaining walls surrounding the patio area that doubles as a seating wall to allow for overflow seating around the pool.
Site access was also a challenge. The pool had to be craned over the home to get it in just the right spot, and our team had to remove a large amount of landscaping on the homeowner’s property, as well as the neighboring property to get our equipment and materials into the space. As a thank you to their neighbors for allowing us to encroach on their lawn, the homeowners paid for additional upgrades to their landscaping at the end of the project. We are so thankful for their flexibility in allowing us to access their space and make this project a success!
