Introducing: Porcelain
The Pros are excited to introduce a new patio material we’re incorporating this year: Porcelain!
While more commonly thought of in indoor decor, porcelain has gained traction as a material for your outdoor spaces as well. Like many trends, porcelain has been big in Europe for several years and is now growing in popularity here in the Midwest. With a similar cost to your typical concrete pavers, porcelain may just be the right material for your next renovation.
Production:
A large benefit to porcelain is the fact that it’s extremely dense. When produced, it goes through a process where it is heavily pressed, creating a material that doesn’t absorb water. This prevents porcelain from going through the freeze and thaw process that normal pavers do, making it less susceptible to cracking or chipping. However, since it’s so dense, porcelain is hard to cut, making added designs and patterns more expensive.
Installation:
Since porcelain is much lighter than concrete pavers, they are much easier and faster to install, especially on large format patios. They’re also great for safety, as they have a traction coating that creates a non-slip patio. With a wide selection of colors and size/shape variations, you’re sure to find porcelain that fits your style.
Maintenance:
Porcelain requires much less maintenance than conventional pavers. Since they don’t stain and are less prone to fading, they won’t need to be sealed consistently. However, just like concrete pavers, they may need an occasional sand or grout application.
