Flower & Shrub Tips for Warmer Months
The summer months are upon us and it’s time to consider how to take care of your landscape within this hotter time of year. Below are tips that will guarantee a healthier season for your landscape and plants.
- Your new plantings (planted in the same year) should be watered in accordance with provided watering instructions, while also considering the natural weather conditions. Remember that younger plants require more water and attention over older plants.
- If you have more established plants, don’t ignore them during these hotter summer months. While they may be more capable of surviving the drier seasons of the year – their overall health and growth could possibly be compromised. While they don’t need to be watered as often, they still need to be watered deeply. If you’re wanting to promote continued growth, another solution is treating the plants with a liquid or granular fertilization.
- During hotter months, it is important to water all plants either early in the morning (before 10 am) or later in the evening (dusk time frame). Watering plants with cold water from a hose during the mid-day sun can shock the plant and cause leaf burn.
- When watering in the summer, it’s important to account for the time of day, but also the humidity levels. Watering excessively when humidity levels are high can lead to disease or mold growth in lawns. If it is an extremely humid day or it has rained recently, there is no need to water the grass that same day.
