Why Should I Plant in the Fall?
When we’re thinking of our end-of-season checklists, we typically think of closing down our irrigation, raking leaves, and pruning back our grasses and perennials. But let’s not forget about one very important fall to-do: planting! While it’s more common to hear about homeowners planting in the spring, what’s so great about waiting until the fall instead?
Many factors play into why fall is one of the best times to plant your perennials, shrubs, and trees, including how the season creates the ideal conditions for long-lasting plant health.
- Root Growth. For starters, 80% of a plant’s roots grow in the late summer/early fall seasons. You’ll notice a big difference in trees and shrubs planted in the fall.
- Ideal Temperatures. The incoming cool weather and warm soil left from the summer season creates the ideal condition for establishing new plants and transplants. In fact, the soil is much warmer in the fall than it is in the spring!
- Watering. While watering is very important for new plants, many will go dormant in the fall while they focus on root growth, meaning they’ll use much less water. This allows for more infrequent watering in the fall, and you’ll find you have a more drought-resistant plant in the spring due to their well-established roots.
- Less Weeds. By now, your garden will have much less competition from weeds than in the summer months, so new plants won’t have to fight as much for nutrients.
So now that we know why fall is one of the best times to plant, let’s talk about timing. Plants should be planted when the ground starts to feel cool, but definitely before it begins to freeze. Typically when evening temperatures are consistently around 40-50 degrees, that’s the perfect time to plant!
